7 TYPES OF WASTE PLUS 1

The Toyota Production System (Lean manufacturing) is a method for total elimination of waste. The 7 + 1 are the wastes of:

  1. Overproduction — producing more than customers buy; this waste leads to excessive inventories
  2. Inventory — excess materials, parts, and assemblies purchased or produced before they are required
  3. Transportation — unnecessary movement of material or product
  4. Processing — unnecessary or inefficient processing and operations
  5. Scrap — materials, labor, and overhead wasted due to defects and product rework
  6. Motion — non-value added movement by workers and production machines
  7. Waiting — idle time of time spent waiting for the next processing step
  8. Person — waste caused when a person performs any of the other seven wastes
